Some Life Lessons

People change over time. They do. What is important to you today may not be that important five or ten years from now, which begs the question, “At the end of the day, what is the most important thing in life?”

The following few ideas might shed some light on the question:

One: good and genuine relationships. Many people become depressed due to feeling disconnected and not having a sense of deep relationship with something bigger than themselves.

Two: keep learning things. There is always something to learn. Try out new things and keep learning. Never let your age stop you from learning. You can always be a beginner at any age.

Three: Don’t chase happiness. Emotions come and go, and every single emotion is valid. Focus on doing the right thing.

Four: Don’t care too much about what people say. Remember that most of the time, we’re not that important in their eyes. After all, we’re going to become more invisible as we age.

Five: Be kind. Being kind has nothing to do with how others perceive you or behave towards you. You’re kind because you know it’s the right thing to do.

Six: Maintain your health, both mentally and physically. You are the one most responsible for this.

There is one more thing…

Do you remember the last time you were happiest? That’s actually when you’re least aware of yourself, right?

When you were really absorbed in doing something, you lost track of time. You really enjoyed doing it. Psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi called it the ‘flow state,’ and if we press it further, the ‘flow state’ requires you to be “non-self-centered.”

Saint Augustine, a Catholic theologian and philosopher, used to say “curvatus in se,” meaning when you are too self-centered, curved inward on yourself, that is when you are miserable. That’s why the most unhappy people are the ones who embrace a lifestyle that is all about them. It’s all me, me, and me.

"We are put on earth a little space to grow, to learn, and then to give back to the world." — Mary Engelbreit
